This is a brief interview with John Zevos who teaches guitar at Timberlane Regional High in Plaistow NH.  I played for his classes last Friday.  He’s doing a great job getting a complete classical program going there and is planning a big Festival next year - thinking about getting the Romeros to play in their beautiful 900 seat auditorium.  His orchestra will come participate in Festival 21 on April 10.

“Gravity and Air” One of 2009’s Best in “Time Out Chicago;” “Solar/Electric” Melts More Faces

The latest from Andrew McKenna Lee, who appears at Festival 21 on April 10 in Boston:

I’m pleased to say that Gravity and Air made it into a couple “Best of 2009” lists, including one from The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, and another in Time Out Chicago, where classical writer Doyle Armbrust wrote:

“The fretwork of guitarist Andrew McKenna Lee is nothing short of remarkable. Opening Gravity and Air with an homage to Bach — a sensuous rendition of Prelude for Lute in D Minor, BWV 999 — Lee continues with five gorgeous ‘Refractions,’ or responses, to the ‘Prelude.’ Discover an altered sense of the passage of time with this remarkably introspective album.”

Meanwhile, Solar/Electric has recently received some attention, most notably, perhaps, from composer Steve Reich, who cited my realization of his Electric Counterpoint as “a magnificent performance, beautifully recorded.”

Lilac.Star.Bird is gorgeous, passionate

Tracy Anne Smith is half of the ChromaDuo who will play at Festival 21 on April 10 at 4pm.  They are fabulous, but I had not heard Tracy alone ‘til this moment.  I wrote Tracy after about 15 mintues into her fabulous CD - this is one hell of a gutarist - and more importantly a top-class musician.

“Dear Tracy - I’m sitting here doing event info on Facebook - listening to your CD (finally) and you take my breath away!  Usually I don’t listen at the computer because it just goes by and I couldn’t even tell you what happened.  But your version of Mysterious Habitats made me stop in my tracks - the sound is great, the playing magnificent.  I generally can’t stand hearing Barrios, and even that gave me a thrill.  All is so tender, passionate, elegant, powerful, intelligent … perfect.  Congratulations!

I recently posted an article on my Festival 21 blog entitled No Nocturnal?! about why the BCGS presents Festival 21, a new music festival in Boston each April.

The main idea was generated from a conversation with Eleftheria Kotzia and I wanted to note here the pieces that have been written for her - very impressive.

Festival 21 scheduled for April 10, 2010

Festival 21 2010, a celebration of American composers and guitarists who are making new things happen in the 21st century, will take place on April 10, 2010 at two locations in Boston: Gordon Chapel, 645 Boylston St., during the day and the First Lutheran Church at 299 Berklee St. in the evening  This year’s event features the ever-popular Members’ Concert, San Francisco composer/guitarist Gyan Riley, BCGS New Music Competition winner Rob MacDonald with Tracy Anne Smith as the ChromaDuo, the Jose Lezcano Trio and Dr. Lezcano conducting a large ensemble piece composed by him for the occasion.  Riley (iconic composer Terry Riley’s son) will present the “marquee” evening concert at FLC preceded by a performance by Society members of Lezcano’s new work.  FLC has equally stunning acoustics for guitar, but holds more audience than Gordon Chapel and is still easily accessible on the T.  Keep an eye on our website for further updates and plan to play either in the Members’ Concert or the BCGS Ensemble - we need as many bodies with guitars as we can get!  Proposals for performances of members are now being accepted, contact Frank Wallace at wallacecomposer@gmail.com.

Pablo Garibay performs La noche de las ranas by Tomás Barreiro.  The night of the frogs is a piece that uses rhetorical principles to articulate its parts as musical speech. It has six sections, and in one of them a quote of the folk song Macochi pitentzin is included. The harmonic language is derived from clusters and the piece makes use of very common devices on the modern guitar literature such as Harmonics, rasgueos and some percussion.  It is an evocative piece that makes reference to the word night (noche) as a meditation over death, and empathizes the note b as homage to J.S. Bach, who loved the b minor key.
